Deaths linked to air pollution in London have fallen by an estimated 40% over the five years from 2019, according to new analysis. The city's mayor, Sadiq Khan, welcomed this as "overwhelming evidence" that his ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ) was saving lives.
The study, conducted by Imperial College London, found that while pollution has a worse health impact than previously understood, the significant reduction in fatalities demonstrates the effectiveness of environmental policies.
